Phone Number Abbreviations - What Were They?????

We can remember when the phone system was getting so many new customers that they went from 5 digit numbers in Chattanooga to 7 digits. That was done by adding 2 numbers in the front of existing numbers. Those first 2 letters were of words selected by the phone company. Example phone number 23456 may have been changed to MA-23456. What word MA represent? Answer: Madison! Answers appear at the bottom for those I remember. Scroll way down. If there are some you know please email me. The different abbreviations that appear in the 1960 phone book are listed to the right. How many do you know?
